Although it was supposed to start selling in the UK more than three weeks ago, the Samsung Galaxy Beam phone/pico projector is only now up for grabs for the wide public.
We don’t know exactly what was the problem with Expansys’ stocks at the beginning of the month, but what we do know is that at least 15 unlucky tech users who didn’t manage to get a Beam then can do so now.
That’s how much units Expansys UK is claiming to have in its stocks, and it might be enough for a day or two. After that, there’s no way to know what will happen, but it’s more than likely that a couple hundred extra Galaxy Beams or so will pop up.
In fact, Samsung has only announced the sale earlier today, so there’s a good chance that Expansys UK didn’t have any Beams available on July 6. Anyway, that’s less important right now, as the good news about the Galaxy Beam seem to be arriving in flocks.
Not only did the new hybrid start selling over in the UK, but its price dropped a bit too. The Galaxy Beam is therefore now available for £384.99 outright, which is £15 below Expansys’ initial list price for the device.
Unveiled way back in February at the MWC, the Beam is one quirky gadget, as it’s set to come with a pretty uninspiring spec sheet, but with a rather unique feature. Sporting a 4-inch WVGA screen with 480 x 800 pixels resolution, the phone has a built-in nHD projector which will most likely attract professionals who are always on the go and need a light slideshow assistant.
The Galaxy Beam is powered by a dual-core 1 GHz NovaThor U8500 processor and features 768 MB of RAM, which don’t exactly make it the ideal phone for gaming or high-quality multimedia playing. The software is another Achilles’ Heel for the Beam, which only runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, albeit with the TouchWiz UI 4.0 on top.
The rest of the specs are pretty standard for a mid-range handheld and include 8 GB of internal storage space, a microSD card slot, dual 5 MP/1.3 MP cameras, and a 2,000 mAh battery.
If you’re not overly pretentious about the hardware and software capabilities of your future phone, but you need a small and light projector, the Galaxy Beam could fit to your needs perfectly. However, you should know that the hybrid is only available for sale in the UK and Singapore for now. As for the US, we almost certainly know the Beam is coming, but we still don’t know when and for how much money.
