Top 10 Best Smallest or Pocket Size Smartphones 2011-2012

If you are one of the people who don’t want to hold your smartphone most of the time, then you should get a smaller handset or a pocket-size smartphone for convenience. Since 2011 up to now, majority of the manufacturers released their own models of pocket-size smartphones.

As small as they are, they don’t cause hassle like bigger devices do. Most of the time, pocket-size phones are offered for cheaper price so it wouldn’t be heavy for you to pay for it as well as to bring it with you anywhere you go. I have here ten of the pocket-size smart phones released since 2011 up to the present. See if you can find the one that would fit your lifestyle.

Samsung Galaxy Pocket

Released in April this year, Samsung Galaxy Pocket has actually been performing really good as far as sales is concerned. For this year, this is the company’s best contender in the entry-level market. Based on reviews from thousands of people who have bought this pocket-sized handset, it is fast and smooth in its processes. That is because even though is it smaller in size, it has powerful specs.

Samsung Galaxy Pocket comes with ARM-based chipset clocked at 832 MHz. I have mentioned in one of my reports here in this site that Samsung is giving at least, 800 MHz processor to its budget-friendly smart phones, and this device is one of the many that would prove my statement. The manufacturer didn’t want to go overboard so this handset was given Android 2.3 Gingerbread. This version of Android is lighter than the latest so 832 MHz CPU is more than enough to run this OS and ensure faster and smoother performance.

Pantech Hotshot.

Most of these apps are also suitable for the iPod touch.

If your top free iPhone apps aren't covered, tell us all about them in the comments.

1. Facebook

The world's biggest social network brings a tightly honed experience to the iPhone and iPod touch, but nonetheless still enables you to access your contacts, feeds and other important information. This sense of focus makes it in many ways superior to using Facebook in a desktop browser.

2. PhotoSynth

We did a bit of a double-take on seeing Microsoft's name attached to this, not least given the lack of a price-tag. But PhotoSynth is a really great panorama app; it's user-friendly and fun to use, especially when watching your panoramas take shape while you capture them.

iOS 6 vs Android Jelly Bean

We take a look at the latest mobile platforms from Google and Apple and pitch them against each other in a head-on showdown

Google has just launched its latest Android platform, it’s version 4.1 but also known as Jelly Bean. Meanwhile, Apple is preparing iOS 6 to launch alongside the iPhone 5 very soon and it’s already been quite public about some of the new features.

In this comparison we’ll put the two side-by-side to see which comes out the best.

Design and performance

In the last three versions of Android - Honeycomb 3.2, Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) 4.0 and now Jelly Bean 4.1 - Google has made leaps and bounds in terms of establishing both a distinctive visual style and in generally improving performance, smoothness and usability, as well as making it much more stable and reliable in the process.

Aesthetically Jelly Bean certainly lives up to its sugary-treat inspired namesake. It’s kept ICS’s striking candy-like blue colour for many of the menu and interface elements, often contrasting starkly to black backgrounds. There’s plenty of white text too though and the font choice is works well for a very clean and high-tech look.

The included wallpapers follow on Google’s recent esoteric style with lots of abstract shapes and interesting palettes, while the icon and widget design ethos has also come across from ICS with lots of bright colours and a sort of cell-shaded, vector art style.

The end result is an oddball blend of a fairly minimalist and monochrome canvas for all the fundamental stuff needed for smartphone operation, such as the menus and control inputs, but then the whole thing has had plenty of noisy and bright stuff slapped on top. It shouldn’t work, but it does.

Is Windows Phone developer interest waning?

IDC believes developers are losing interest in Windows Phone. We try and find out if this is the case

Windows Phone is in a fragile state. One minute we hear what could be deemed as good news in the form of Nokia announcing four million Lumias have shipped. And then we saw a marketshare jump in July - the biggest yet, in fact.

But the world still isn't quite convinced, especially tech journalists and analysts who believe the platform hasn't got what it takes, and that Android and Apple have the market all sewn up.

And now IDC, who seems to have faith in the platform judging by past predictions, is a little weary of the Windows Marketplace and the level of developer support surrounding it.

A survey by IDC and Appcelerator found only six per cent of developers believe Windows Phone can win in the world of enterprise. This is compared with six per cent surveyed in Q3 of 2011.

Not a particularly big drop, but the gap between Windows Phone and its competitors remains significant. Developers favoured Apple with 53 per cent of votes. Second went to Android, with 37 per cent of votes.

It gets worse, according to the data. The number of developers 'very interested' in Windows Phone went from 37 per cent in Q1 of 2012, to 25 per cent in Q2 of 2012. Not a great result, then, but IDC did say this was expected, given the still secretive sales figures, the Windows Phone 8/7.8 update saga, and competitive challenges.

Samsung is working on 350 PPI AMOLED displays that will trump Apple’s Retina

The display of Samsung’s latest flagship, the Galaxy S3, hovers just over the 300+ PPI (pixel per inch) mark, which, according to Steve Jobs himself, is enough for people to not be able to distinguish the individual pixels. Apple later backtracked and started releasing “Retina displays” with only 264 PPI for the new iPad, and only 220 PPI for the new Macbook Pro, claiming that the difference in viewing distance compensates for the smaller pixel density.

But Samsung is planning to make displays that are a lot sharper than the iPhone’s Retina. Thanks to advancements in in the Fine Metal Mask production technique and use of Super AMOLED technology instead of IPS LCD, Samsung will be able to achieve 350 PPI.

These next-gen displays will be used for both phones and tablets, so perhaps we’ll finally get to see that long-rumored 2560×1600 tablet from Samsung, with the also long-rumored Exynos 5250 chip.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread vs. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

September 23, 2008, Android 1.0, the first commercial version of Android is released. Just over 3 years later, October 19, 2011, after evolving from Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, and Honeycomb, not including Astro and Bender, Ice Cream Sandwich was announced.

Along the way, Android put out loads of features and took in some 200+ million users. Today, we’re going to be breaking down two of the newest, and arguably best, Android versions (Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich). Obviously, a winner has already been chosen for this Versus Match. However, look at the competition as more of a comparison and evolution of Android.

UI (User Interface)

It is hard to miss the fact that Google was going for an improved User Interface with Ice Cream Sandwich. Just from taking a look at the search bar, you can tell that Ice Cream Sandwich is much sleeker than Gingerbread. Mainly, Ice Cream Sandwich will make it easier for users to find those common buttons and actions that were always playing hide and go seek in older Android versions.

Furthermore, the animations and “typeface” have been refined to play nicely with your new 720p HD display. Furthermore, Ice Cream Sandwich introduces the new font “Roboto”. This Google creation will make reading easier and give Android a more modern feel.

By far, the most visible interface on any device is the font you read everything from websites, to emails, to SMS’ on. With Android 4.0, Google has designed a font completely from the ground up, and it looks exceptional. Dubbed Roboto, it’s a font built with modernity in mind, and looks great.

With a heavy dose of the use of intuitive gestures, and the ability for developers to add them too, Ice Cream Sandwich really is as silky smooth as its name implies.

Samsung Galaxy Beam now selling in the UK, US release still unannounced

Although it was supposed to start selling in the UK more than three weeks ago, the Samsung Galaxy Beam phone/pico projector is only now up for grabs for the wide public.

We don’t know exactly what was the problem with Expansys’ stocks at the beginning of the month, but what we do know is that at least 15 unlucky tech users who didn’t manage to get a Beam then can do so now.

How To Update Samsung Galaxy ACE S5830 with CM9 Beta 8 Android 4.0.3 ICS Custom ROM

We’ve already told you how to upgrade the firmware of your Samsung Galaxy ACE S5830 to Android 4.0.3 ICS CM9 Beta 6 and Beta 7. But those are the older versions of CyanogenMod 9 and now we have the latest version which is the Beta 8.

Even so, please bear in mind that this is not the official firmware for Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich. There’s no official ICS update for the Galaxy ACE.

With CM9 Beta 8, you will get a more stable firmware. This version will also address the random force close errors from the previous versions. Also, we cannot guarantee the outcome of this installation. You could get your smartphone bricked and totally unusable. Just don’t blame us for any damages that could happen to your phone. Therefore, flash this custom ROM at your own risk. If you know nothing about rooting and custom ROMs, better ask for help.

How To Install Adobe Flash on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Devices

Chances are you’ve already heard that the new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system does not support Adobe Flash. Frankly speaking, this is the one downside in what is otherwise a great edition of Android, but the good news is that there are ways around it.

First though, you need to determine whether you’re using a device that has been upgraded to Jelly Bean (such as the Galaxy Nexus) or one that has come with Jelly Bean pre-installed (currently only the Nexus 7).
